Have you been away from the Sacrament of Reconciliation (aka, Confession or the Sacrament of Penance), but felt God stirring in your heart to give it a try, again? Or, perhaps, you’re just a little rusty and need a refresher? Or, maybe you’re a regular Confession-goer, but you would like to deepen your understanding and learn how to get more out of this Sacrament? Whatever your case, you are welcome to join us for a one-day workshop!
There will be three parts to the day:
1. Sin in General
We'll begin by looking at sin in general. What is sin, and what is not? What are the different kinds of sins? How do we evaluate an action to know if it is right or wrong? Are there some actions which are always wrong, regardless of our intentions? What role does conscience play? How do we examine our conscience, going deeper than the usual laundry list of sins that we have? How do we overcome our sins, especially habitual sins?
2. The Seven Deadly Sins
This is where the rubber meets the road. Also called the capital sins, these are the sins to which our fallen human nature is inclined and which, as a result, are the source of all other human failings. The name "capital" does not necessarily mean they are grave sins. Rather, they are leading tendencies toward sin (from Latin capitalis, principal, acting in the manner of a head) and are seven in number: pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, and sloth. By examining these tendencies, and how they manifest in ourselves, we can get to the root causes of our particular sins, and finally work to overcome them.
3. How to Make a Good Confession
We'll look at the conditions for making a valid confession--the five sentences that will heal your life:
